While it’s possible for you to survive in the wild with nothing, with a bit of preparation you’re always better off.
Here are some steps you can take to prepare for survival situations and still require only a few tools or devices.
Build a survival shelter and sleep in it. Start in warm weather, but return several times. Make further improvements and camp there under tougher conditions. This will give you a clear idea of what is required.
Learn the bow drill. It is the easiest way to make fire by friction. It took me a few weeks to practice … and I learned slowly.
Create a basic survival kit. Even a small quantity can be different in a life situation from make. The photo above shows some of the things I have in my kit:
- parachute chord for making fire equipment,
- a strong sharp knife,
- fishing line,
- contact whistle,
- wool gloves and scarf,
- water bottle.
What would you take with you if you could take a small bag with you?
Improve your plant and tree identification skills. Learn the poisonous plants and food. In my landscape analysis video, you’ll find some tips for viewing patterns in a forest. This can also be the best location for a shelter help.
As always, the best survival tip is to avoid real survival situations. Be prepared, but always be aware when you are on the move. Tell people where you are going. And do not get lost!
Be safe out there and have fun!
